I am an independent assessor/tutor/adviser in specific learning difficulties. In this role, I carry out diagnostic assessments of children and adults for specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia) including assessments of HE students for Disabled Students Allowance (DSA). I provide some 1:1 teaching to students with maths or literacy or specific learning difficulties. I am also a Professional Practice Tutor for the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with SpLD (PATOSS). This involves providing professional advice and support to students undertaking a Masters level course in SpLD assessment at Bath Spa University and assessing their professional portfolios. I also work for PATOSS assessing the sample reports sent in by applicants for the Assessment Practising Award. I am an associate lecturer for the University of Worcester and a tutor on the Advanced Diploma course Overcoming Barriers to Learning in Maths. I jointly edit, with Fil, the Dyscalculia and Maths Learning Difficulties Conference newsletter.

I have worked for 25 years in learning support mainly in secondary schools but also some primary. I have been a SENCO in schools in West Sussex, Wiltshire, Bradford and North Yorkshire. For four years I was Head of the Learning Difficulties Team for Education Bradford’s Learning Support Service. This involved supporting and training SENCOs in Bradford and assessing and supporting students with learning difficulties. My most recent teaching post was in FE/HE provision in Leeds as a dyslexia tutor/assessor. At this college, I also taught inclusive maths teaching approaches for maths tutors on the Additional Diploma for Teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
I have a MEd in Special and Inclusive Education from the University of Sheffield and a Post Graduate Diploma in the teaching of learners with SpLD (dyslexia). I have recently completed the Diploma in Overcoming Barriers to Learning in Maths with Learning Works and the University of Worcester.
I am interested in striving for high quality assessment and also providing relevant and achievable recommendations. I feel strongly that there is a gap in our knowledge and understanding of specific maths difficulties compared to literacy. There is uncertainty about what is required in an assessment for dyscalculia. I am working on developing this assessment and identification for dyscalculia.
Assessment of specific learning difficulties
In my session, I will cover the range of assessments of reading, writing, spelling, maths, ability, phonological skills, working memory and visual processing that are useful to the SENCO whether the assessment is to inform teaching, to provide evidence for exam access arrangements or to inform when a formal diagnosis of dyslexia may be required. You will have the opportunity to try out various assessments and discuss their interpretation, strengths, limitations etc
Target Audience/Age group of pupils
This session can be adapted for SENCOs, learning support tutors in primary, secondary or FE/HE settings or those with a Diploma (or equivalent) in SpLD who are considering applying for a Practising Certificate.
Assessment for dyscalculia
I will look at the checklists, screening tests and formal assessments that are available for assessing maths difficulties/dyscalculia. The aim will be to put together a suite of assessments suitable for your own situation/age range of students whether the assessment is to inform teaching, apply for exam access OR for a more formal diagnosis of dyscalculia.
I can also provide assessments for SpLD (dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia) and teaching support to students with these difficulties.
Target Audience/Age group of pupils
This session can be adapted to suit primary, secondary or FE/HE teachers and SENCOs or those with a Diploma (or equivalent) in SpLD who are considering applying for a Practising Certificate.
